In order to maintain the highest level of veterinary care for our patients, we are now introducing digital dental radiography! By introducing this advanced technology, we are able to get a more accurate picture of your pet’s oral health. The digital x-ray allows us to see deep below the gum line to better diagnose periodontal disease, bone loss, enamel defects, and tooth fractures.

Digital x-rays allow us to be proactive in diagnosing any potential health issues before they become serious. Since periodontal disease can spread to the heart, liver, and kidneys, this technology can be lifesaving.

Just like people, proper dental care for pets is extremely important. Your pet’s mouth is truly the window to their overall health and well being. Unfortunately, 75% of dogs and cats are currently suffering from some form of dental disease.

Causes of Dental Disease

Dental disease starts with the buildup of plaque and tarter on the surface of the teeth and around the gum line. If the tooth surface is not kept clean, dental tartar buildup will start to develop on the tooth surface giving bacteria-ridden plaque the prime surface to accumulate. If left untreated, the plaque and tarter can irritate the gum tissue which often leads to an infection in the bone surrounding the teeth.

Effects of Dental Disease

The most common form of dental disease is bad breath (halitosis). This is usually just a indicator of bigger health issues.

Since dental disease starts with the teeth and gums, it is common for your pet to experience bleeding and oral pain. It should be noted that oral pain in pets can be just as painful as with people. If your pet has lost its appetite or drops food while eating, this may be an indicator they are in pain.

Errosion of the teeth and gum tissue can make the teeth loose. Some animals experience tooth loss.

The most severe form of dental disease is when the bacteria from the mouth gains access to the bloodstream. The bacteria can then spread to the heart, liver, and kidneys, potentially causing major damage to those organs.

Management of Dental Disease

The most important thing you can do for your pet is maintain a consistent dental care regimen at home with routine veterinary dental cleanings.

Are you traveling with your pet this summer? There are many things to consider before taking your pet on vacation. Here are some important tips that will help ensure your pet stays happy, healthy, and safe!

Health Certificates for Flying

The U.S. Department of Agriculture requires that all pets have an up-to-date health certificate issued by a licensed veterinarian within 30 days of travel date. In addition, a rabies immunization is also required.

Microchipping

Your pet should be implanted with a microchip that will identify you as the owner if your pet were to get lost during your travels. If your pet becomes lost and is returned to an animal hospital or local veterinarian, the microchip’s unique identification number will provide your name and contact information from the international registry.

Learn More About Microchip Identification

Heartworm Prevention

Heartworm disease is an infection of parasitic worms that grow inside the chambers of your pet’s heart and large blood vessels. Although the disease is very dangerous, it is completely preventable with proper medication. The disease is spread solely by mosquitoes so if you are traveling to an area of high humidity, you are increasing your pets chances of infection.

Flea and Tick Prevention

Fleas and ticks are blood-sucking insects that can cause devastating health problems for your dog or cat. Fleas can transmit tapeworms and cause serious skin allergies such as dermatitis. Ticks can infect your pet with over 15 known diseases such as Lyme Disease and Rocky Mountain spotted fever.

Lyme Disease Vaccination

Lyme Disease is one of the most common infections caused by ticks. This disease can cause inflammation of the joints, kidney problems, depression, and lack of appetite.

Tranquilizers (if needed)

Tranquilizers can be used to calm your pet if traveling causes extreme anxiety in your pet.
